Descaling the Melitta Caffeo: Solo, Passione and Barista

In its manuals, Melitta prescribes descaling about every 3 months, or as soon as the machine asks. How you start the programme differs by model. So keep the steps separate.

Caffeo Solo

The symbol is on when descaling is needed and flashes during the programme. Allow about 30 minutes.

  1. Switch the machine off. This is important on the Solo: otherwise the programme will not start. Remove the filter from the tank.
  2. Hold the two-cup button and the on/off button together for about 3 seconds.
  3. Empty the drip tray. Add descaler to the empty tank according to the packaging, put the tank back and start with the button shown on the display.
  4. As soon as the symbol indicates: empty the drip tray, rinse the tank well, fill it with tap water up to the max line and continue.
  5. Empty the drip tray once more. You can then put the filter back.

Passione with rotary dial

Here it is the other way round: the symbol flashes when descaling is needed and stays on during the programme. Allow about 25 minutes.

  1. Get the machine ready for use and prepare 0,5 litre of solution. Place the filter in a container of tap water.
  2. Hold the Service and Stoom (steam) buttons together for more than 2 seconds.
  3. Empty the drip tray and the coffee grounds container. Set the selector to hot water. Put the drip tray back without the coffee grounds container.
  4. Place the coffee grounds container under the Cappuccinatore. Pour the solution into the water tank and put it back.
  5. Turn the rotary dial clockwise as far as it goes as soon as the machine asks.
  6. When the machine asks: empty both containers, put the drip tray back and place the coffee grounds container under the Cappuccinatore again. Clean the tank, fill it with fresh water and put it back.
  7. When the water stops, turn the dial anticlockwise as far as it goes. Then empty both containers and put them back.

Passione OT and Barista (with menu)

Hold the menu/ok button for at least 2 seconds. Go to Care > Descaling (Verzorging > Ontkalken), choose Start and confirm. Then follow the display: the intermediate steps are not in the manual. The Passione OT and Barista T/TS take about 25 minutes. The Barista Smart takes about 15 minutes according to the manual. Do not interrupt the programme.

CautionDuring and just after the programme, hot water and steam may come out of the steam wand. We have not checked the Solo & Perfect Milk: for that model, follow your own manual.
