Your coffee machine's water filter: how often should you replace it?

A water filter keeps limescale and taste-affecting substances out of your water: your coffee tastes purer and your machine scales up less quickly. But a filter only works if you replace it on time. A worn-out filter no longer does anything.

How often per brand?

  • Siemens and Bosch (Brita Intenza): after 50 litres, or after 2 months at the latest.
  • Philips and Saeco with AquaClean: when the machine asks for it.
  • Saeco and Philips with Brita Intenza+: about every 2 months, or after about 50 litres.
  • Jura (CLARIS): when the machine asks for it.
  • Melitta (Pro Aqua): about every 2 months, or after about 50 litres.
  • Sage (ClaroSwiss): every 3 months.
Rule of thumbIf your machine gives a message, follow it. No message? Allow about 2 months and put the replacement date in your diary.

The right filter for your machine

Filters differ per model and are not interchangeable. Check the filter currently in your machine, or the manual. Also view all water filters.

Don't forget your filter when descaling

Remove the filter from the water tank before you descale, and then put it back or fit a new one. It is also a good moment to replace it.
